The PIAA H4 HID Conversion Kits functions as a true High/Low HID bulb.  The bulb actually shifts between a high and low position to mimic the function of a standard halogen bulb, giving increased performance. 

Some other H4 HID aftermarket bulbs promote a high/low function.  With the PIAA bulb, this function is mechanical.  This ‘mechanical’ function terminology means the bulb between high and low beam  is operated via a magnetic solenoid switch which shuts off after re-positioning. With other products, the function is electrical.  The difference is the ballast must maintain an electrical flow to the bulb, which means there is a constant current requirement to hold the position of bulb at high beam. Lesser quality ballasts don’t always offer consistent voltage output, which can lead to strain on the system and ...flickerieng of light between the H4 high and low beam.  Ongoing use of high beams can lead to premature failure with lower quality systems.
